Chapter 12

PAULO PULLED out the documents from his briefcase as he rode the elevator to Dr. Roberts’s floor. The scope of the subpoena might be limited to information pertaining to the death of Marnie Becker’s child, but Paulo marveled at the speed with which it had been issued. Was it the small town factor? Or the media frenzy over the case? Either way, he had the means to get Dr. Roberts to talk about one of her patients. He’d opted to show up unannounced rather than give her time to bring in the hospital lawyers.

Exiting the elevator, he headed for the doctor’s office. He’d confirmed with the front desk that Dr. Roberts didn’t currently have a patient. He knocked on the door.

“Enter,” Dr. Roberts said, her voice curt.

Paulo entered the office. Dr. Roberts’s gray hair was pulled back into a severe bun. She didn’t look happy to see him. Paulo wasn’t surprised. Without asking for permission, Paulo took a seat on the plush chair in front of Dr. Roberts’s antique wooden desk. “I arrested Martin Becker yesterday. Are you familiar with him?”

“Martin Becker is not one of my patients,” she said, evading the question effectively. The tightness of her mouth telegraphed her familiarity with him.

“He’s the brother of one of your patients, Marnie Becker, correct?” When the doctor didn’t respond, Paulo handed her the subpoena. “Based on information obtained from Martin Becker, his sister has become a person of interest in the disappearance of Matt Wilson. I need to ask you some questions about Marnie and the death of her son, Brandon.”

“Doctor/Patient confidentiality pre—”

Paulo put his hands on her desk, pushing down hard enough to make the old wood creak. “We both know there are exceptions to that rule when innocent lives are at stake. And I’ve got a court order to back it up.”

“Yes, detective. But your only evidence Ms. Becker is involved seems to be the unreliable testimony of a drug addict looking to avoid jail time.” She tossed the paperwork into her outbox. “I’ll have the hospital’s legal team review the subpoena and get back to you. Good day, detective.”

Paulo had no intention of giving up that easily. “Martin’s plea deal is contingent on the safe return of Matt Wilson. He has no motivation for lying.”

“I wouldn’t be surprised if he was punishing her for refusing to give him money. He has an expensive habit to feed, but she has—rightfully so—been unwilling to fund his drug use.”

Paulo resisted the urge to smirk. He might not have Devin’s honeyed tongue, but he had his own ways of dragging the truth out of people. People loved to contradict you. “I’d like to ask Marnie about it, but no one knows where she is. She hasn’t logged on to work her shift on the customer service line since two days before Matt Wilson was abducted. And she’s not at home.”

Dr. Roberts looked startled. Opening up a small laptop, she said, “Her work is supposed to contact me if she misses two consecutive days.
